Sharing the Planet
An inquiry into rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.
Central Idea
Organisms adapt in order to survive in their environment.
Lines of Inquiry
● How organisms adapt
● Adaptations help organisms to survive (reasons of adaptations)
● Human responsibility in keeping the balance of nature
Key Concepts: Function, Connection, Responsibility
Related Concepts:
● Science: Living Things (adaptation, evolution, genetics, organism)
● ICT: Multimedia, sound, text, video, digital imaging
Teacher questions/provocations will drive these inquiries.
1. What is adaptation?
2. Why do organisms have to adapt?
3. What happens if an organism cannot adapt?
4. What happens if an organism survives/cannot survive in natural selection?
5. What can human do to help other organisms to survive?
Learner Profile:
Knowledgeable, Caring and Reflective
Attitudes:
Curiosity, Appreciation and Independence
Skills:
· Thinking Skills: application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation
· Research Skills: collecting, recording, organizing, and interpreting data, presenting research findings
· Communication Skills: writing, presenting

Guided Questions for survival game
1) What 3 variations of the organism did you choose the first?
2) What are the environmental pressures that your organisms have?
3) Were you failed or successful on the first game?
4) What year did you end up to? Why?
5) How did you make decision to improve the result of your next game?
6) What were the variations of the organisms that you choose in the next game?
7) Were you failed or successful on the second game? Was there any improvement? Why
8) How many times did you play the game until you succeed to "survive the organism"?
9) What tips you might have for other players so they can succeed playing the game?
10) Overall, what things that you learn from the game? Conclude!

Assessment 1
Assessment 1 guidelines
Different types of adaptation
Open this link:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/adaptations and choose 5 different adaptation, share with your peers.

Assessment 2
Binomial nomenclature
Read attached file and then you will find a good logical reason why we have to name a species by using binomial nomenclature system.
Guideline to understand about 'survival of the fittest'
You will determine habitat for your own creature that you are going to make. Make sure it must be a real habitat (please see http://www.enchantedlearning.com/biomes/ for your reference).
Then you have to describe your original creature based on its traits (physical, physiological and behavioral) suit with its habitat. Finally you have make 5 variations from your own original creature because it faces different environmental pressures.

Summative assessment
Summative Task:
Students choose one living thing. They make a digital story. They need to investigate the way it adapts to the environment. Criteria: · Describe the features of the chosen organism (habitat, the way they live) · Describe the type of adaptations · Explain how the adaptations help the organism survive in its environment · Use IT to present the summative project Summative task guideline
After exploring and practicing on Movie Maker, read some attached information about the content of your summative task.
